Preview
Brentford host Tottenham Hotspur at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, August 22, in one of the opening weekend’s London derbies. Brentford are coming off a ninth-place finish last season, while Tottenham had a much tougher campaign and ended up 17th. Spurs have since appointed Roberto De Zerbi, giving the club a fresh start ahead of the new season.
Brentford Preview
Brentford exceeded expectations last season under Keith Andrews, finishing ninth and coming close to qualifying for European football. Andrews is now heading into his second season as head coach, so the Bees have more continuity than their opponents.
The biggest threat remains Igor Thiago. The Brazilian striker scored 22 Premier League goals last season, finishing second in the league’s scoring charts behind Erling Haaland. That makes him one of the most dangerous forwards in this fixture.
Brentford have also added attacking options during the summer, including Callum Wilson, while record signing Mamadou Sangaré impressed in pre-season by scoring against Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Bees finished pre-season strongly, beating Eintracht Frankfurt 7-0, which should give them confidence going into the opener.
Tottenham Hotspur Preview
Tottenham are entering a new era under Roberto De Zerbi after their difficult 2025/26 campaign.
Spurs survived relegation but finished only 17th, and De Zerbi has been brought in to give the team a clearer style and rebuild confidence. The club have also invested heavily, with Sandro Tonali among their major summer additions.
There are still some concerns in attack. Tottenham’s squad has plenty of technical quality, but they do not currently have a proven elite-level striker, while several important players have fitness concerns.
De Zerbi’s pre-season has provided some encouraging signs. Spurs beat Chelsea 2-1 in Sydney, while they also drew 1-1 with Sydney FC before winning the penalty shootout.
The main question is whether the new manager can quickly make Spurs more organised without taking away their attacking threat.
Head to Head
This has been a competitive fixture in recent seasons. The most recent meeting at the Gtech Community Stadium ended 0-0 on January, 2026. That result also highlights a problem with using previous meetings too heavily for this game. Both clubs have changed in important areas, particularly Tottenham with De Zerbi now in charge.

Goalscorers to Watch
Igor Thiago is the obvious player to watch for Brentford after his 22-goal Premier League campaign.
For Tottenham, Richarlison could be important if he gets the central attacking role. He scored against Chelsea during pre-season and could benefit from De Zerbi’s attacking approach.

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction
This is a difficult opening fixture because Brentford are the more settled side, while Tottenham arguably have the higher ceiling if De Zerbi can get the team playing quickly. Brentford’s home advantage and Thiago’s goalscoring record make them dangerous, but Tottenham’s summer changes could make them a different team from the one that struggled last season.
The game could be close, but I expect Spurs to have enough quality to find a way through.
Prediction: Brentford 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Tip: Both Teams to Score (BTTS – Yes) Brentford and Tottenham both have enough attacking quality to find the net, with recent models also leaning toward goals at both ends.
