Brighton & Hove Albion host Aston Villa at the American Express Community Stadium in the opening weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Both teams have European ambitions this season, but they arrive at the new campaign in very different situations. Brighton have kept much of their structure from last season, while Villa have seen several important players leave during the summer.
Brighton Preview
Brighton are entering their 10th consecutive season in the Premier League. Fabian Hürzeler’s side finished eighth last season, the second consecutive campaign in which they achieved that position. Their league finish also earned them a place in the Conference League play-off round.
Their pre-season results were encouraging. Brighton won all 2 of their friendly matches against Roma and Bologna, scoring 4 goals across those games.
However, the timing of this fixture is not ideal. Brighton played Tromsø in Norway on Thursday in the first leg of their Conference League play-off and were held to a 0-0 draw. That leaves Hürzeler with a short turnaround before Villa’s visit.
Yankuba Minteh is expected to miss the game, while Evan Ferguson, Stefanos Tzimas and Carlos Baleba are also unavailable. Kaoru Mitoma and Matthew O’Riley are doubts.
Aston Villa Preview
Aston Villa begin the season as the reigning Europa League champions, but their squad has changed considerably over the summer.
Unai Emery has lost several established players, including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Douglas Luiz and Lucas Digne. Villa have responded by bringing in players such as Johan Manzambi, João Gomes, Matteo Ruggeri and goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
Villa’s pre-season was less convincing than Brighton’s. They won their early friendlies against Walsall, BG Pathum United, but then lost to Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain in UEFA super cup and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
There is also uncertainty around Ollie Watkins. Emery has confirmed that Villa have received offers for the striker, although he has made it clear that he does not want to lose him. Watkins scored 16 Premier League goals last season.
Villa will also be without Amadou Onana and Johan Manzambi, while Leon Bailey is sidelined.

Aston Villa have had the better of this fixture recently.
Villa won 4-3 at the Amex last season in a seven-goal thriller, with Watkins scoring twice. They then won the return meeting 1-0 in February 2026.

Brighton vs Aston Villa Prediction
This is a difficult opening-day game to call. Brighton have looked sharper during pre-season and have home advantage, but their Thursday trip to Norway means Villa could have more energy during the second half.
Villa’s squad changes make them harder to assess, although Emery still has enough quality to make this competitive. Brighton’s home advantage could ultimately be the difference, but I expect both sides to create chances.
